When Facebook Goes Public, So Will Your Secrets
Over and over, Facebook has proven itself counter to the philosophy developed by Ontario Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian called “Privacy By Design.” It is the notion of embedding privacy into the design of technology and it is an approach that is now enjoying widespread currency well beyond Canada’s borders, but not at Facebook.

Privacy: Ontario’s privacy commissioner spreads gospel of technology without tradeoffs to San Diego residents
Energy customers in southern California are to benefit from safeguards developed by Ontario’s privacy commission.
San Diego Gas & Electric is updating its electrical grid to include “smart meters” — energy-metering technology so detailed that a company can tell what electrical devices a customer uses, when and for how long.
Potentially, such data could be compiled to profile customer behaviour, a valuable commodity on the open market. But the firm decided that the information belongs to the customer and must be kept private.

How to Build Privacy by Design into Web and Mobile
Building great online and mobile products is hard enough with a small team and limited resources, so why add to the difficulty by embracing “privacy by design” principles? With so many free, easy web tools available and an “everyone else is doing it” mentality, why take time to create extra user controls and transparency? The reality is your users are starting to understand the issues and will soon demand it. You should demand it too.

CMOs: Are You Ready For the Next Technology Revolution?
In the process of interviewing several Chief Marketing Officers regarding current trends in the marketing field, I came across a new start-up company called Personal, working in a very interesting space that will transform both the access that CMOs have to customer information and the quality of that information.
Personal provides a Privacy by Design environment in which its users (who Personal calls owners) choose the information to store in its database and with whom to share it. Called a “Life Management Platform” by The Economist, Personal allows owners to add companies they trust to their personal network and give them access to rich data about their preferences and interests. They can choose to share this information directly or anonymously, depending on the context.

Op-Ed: Beware of ‘Surveillance by Design’
I feel the need to raise a growing concern regarding the lack of understanding of a key privacy issue – the ease of data linkages in an ever-increasing online world.
In this day and age of 24/7 online expanded connectivity and immediate access to digitized information, new analytic tools and algorithms now make it possible, not only to link a number with a name, but also to combine information from multiple sources, ultimately creating an accurate profile of a personally identifiable individual.
