Commissioner Cavoukian launches new paper at Internet Conference
TORONTO – Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, Dr. Ann Cavoukian has released a new white paper entitled, “Mobile Near Field Communications (NFC) “Tap ‘n Go” – Keep it Secure and Private,” at an Ottawa Conference on “The Future of the Internet: Opportunities & Challenges of Web 3.0.”
Nokia was also a major contributor to this paper, which illustrates NFC’s capabilities with four smartphone use case scenarios, investigates privacy and security risks, and offers practical “Privacy by Design” solutions to protect privacy, empower consumers, and build trust in the mobile ecosystem. Ontario’s Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian Named as one of the Top 25 Women of Influence
TORONTO – Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, was honoured today by Women of Influence Inc. with an award marking her selection as one of Canada’s most influential women.
This announcement follows in the footsteps of Commissioner Cavoukian’s award in 2007 from the Women’s Executive Network as one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada. Cited as a “Trailblazer and Trendsetter,” the Commissioner was lauded for her proactive and innovative work in the protection of privacy.

TORONTO – Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, Dr. Ann Cavoukian, and Kim Cameron, a leading digital identity expert, have released a new joint publication called “Wi-Fi Positioning Systems: Beware of Unintended Consequences – Issues Involving the Unforeseen Uses of Pre-existing Architecture.” In this white paper, launched at the SC Congress Canada 2011 Conference in Toronto today, Cavoukian and Cameron call for the use of Privacy by Design to protect the privacy of mobile device users. Commissioner Cavoukian receives International Privacy Award
TORONTO, June 9, 2011: Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, Dr. Ann Cavoukian, today received a prestigious international privacy award for her “pioneering” work in the area of privacy protection.
Commissioner Cavoukian received the 2011 Kristian Beckman Award from the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), an organization that represents IT Societies from over 50 countries around the globe. Dr. Cavoukian is the first Canadian to receive this noteworthy award, which is granted annually to an individual who has “significantly contributed to the development of information security, especially achievements with an international perspective.” Established in 1992, the award commemorates the first chair of the IFIP committee, Kristian Beckman from Sweden.

Commissioner Cavoukian, Arizona State University Partner on Roadmap for Applying Privacy by Design to Mobile Technologies
TORONTO – Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian and Arizona State University’s Privacy by Design Research Lab have released a new white paper that maps the way forward for achieving meaningful privacy protection in the mobile space. Commissioner Cavoukian will share highlights of the paper during a keynote presentation at the International Association of Privacy Professionals’ (IAPP) Global Privacy Summit in Washington March 11.

Privacy Groups Announce Developer Challenge for Mobile Apps
Today four groups announced the 2011 Develop for Privacy Challenge (www.develop4privacy.org), a new competition for mobile application developers to address privacy concerns surrounding mobile phones and other portable devices. Sponsoring the Challenge are the ACLU of Northern California, the ACLU of Washington, and the Tor Project, with the assistance of the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner’s Office. The winner will be announced in August 2011 at an event in Las Vegas, coinciding with the DEFCON and Black Hat security conferences.
